J.R. Nyquit’s linked article below is more than well worth the time you’ll spend to read the entire piece. It is excellent in its content. For me, his the ‘bottom line’ quoted below is exactly what needs to be spread far and wide, and IMHO, should have been the opening, but hey, I didn’t write the piece.
I learned effective writing in the mid 80’s while on active duty during a tour on staff at a NCO Academy (a pretty intense in residence course that awarded 11 semester hours after successfully graduating the course). One of the main tenets for effective writing was, (and remains for me today) make your bottom line your top line.” In other words, cut to the chase at the beginning of your paper, and then use the rest of your paper to persuade and support your ‘Top Line’
Here’s the literal bottom line from J.R. Nyquist’s linked article, here:
“To save the country we must begin to call things by their proper names. We cannot be afraid of the enemy’s egalitarian rhetoric. We must not allow them to intimidate us. We must take charge of our own language. We must name our enemy. We must identify the communists and expose their activity. If we fail to do this, we are lost.”
Do go read the entire post. Again, it’s well worth your time, and then spread the link around.
