Bottom Line? Well worth the money. American product for Americans. Well-made and reasonably priced.
Back story: I received a quick note from WRSA asking me if I’d mind testing out a new stone by a company called, “AmericaStone.” The company sent it and I received it about mid-April. I was duly impressed, and after being given the sample, replaced the india-stone in my Randall 12-9 sheath with the AmericaStone. It’s that good.
Here’s my take on it:
Packaging: Nice little cordura package; the only thing to make it better would be either a Forest Green or Coyote Brown color, as most folks use those on field/tactical type gear. For the hunter or outdoorsman, though, the black is fine. Rather than the belt loop, if a MOLLE snap was on it, it’d be great for load bearing equipment, but that is a ‘gravy’ modification. The belt loop works fine.
Ease of Use: If you’re going to try it on a larger knife, make sure you watch the instructional video. If you’re going to primarily use it on smaller pocket knives (tactical/survival type), you can use it like you would a regular whet stone.
Trial: I used this stone on my CRKT “Ignitor T”, which had a good edge on it, but hadn’t been sharpened for about 3 months and was due for a tune up. I use this thing on everything from letters to opening cases of coffee at work (thick cardboard) to EDC. I pay attention to the edge, and when I usually sharpen it, I use the Edge Pro Apex 4, as I do all my knives. So, I hand sharpened it with the AmericaStone. I took about 5 minutes to bring the edge from ‘ok’ sharp to scalpel sharp. Very pleasing!
General: This would be a great replacement for the India type stones on survival knives popularized by Randall Made Knives and others (I’ve since put the provided sample in my Randall sheath). I also like the round and pointed edges that allow for the sharpening of other blades/edges/serrations than just a knife. The round shape lets you hone the false edge of a clip point Bowie-styled blade; something that eludes most folks when using straight stones. That curve really comes in handy!
This is a great product that anyone concerned with long term knife capability should want in their kit.
