A lot of folks have the notion to ‘GOOD’ (Get Out Of Dodge) when the SHTF in a catastrophic sense. Long experience in training others and personal prepping clearly shows that developing a NPP (Neighborhood Protection Plan) comprised of community preparations, cooperation, and participation is the better choice. For folks in neighborhoods that flat out refuse to become involved due to normalcy bias or other reasons, reasonably short jaunts (somewhere you can actually walk to if necessary where you are now per-positioning long term supplies) to where you can be part of an active NPA/NPP/NPT is much better, by a long shot, than the oft heard, “We’re going to GOOD!”
Simply, your chances of survival during a GOOD situation will proportionately diminish as the situation worsens. Take for example, the 14th day of a major regional grid down scenario. Imagine trying to get out of an area like the photo below when the roads are gridlocked, meaning you’re on foot.
The ‘situation worsening’ includes the ‘ROL’ (Rule Of Law) being less and less able to help protect you (the fear of legal consequences and interaction with LEO will diminish exponentially as the situation continues -they’ll be looking to take care of their own families and friends – historical data supports this theory) and the expenditure of carried supplies (in your vehicle or on your back) increases your vulnerability to more than just marauders. Hunger, thirst, illness and disease will start to haunt as time goes on with the effects exacerbated by the increasingly constant potential for physical danger.
But that aside, look at where you are going to “GOOD” to in the first place. Have you prepositioned supplies? Have you trained walking carrying heavy packs for at least 10 miles at a crack? Can your ‘precious cargo’ walk with their proportionately heavy packs as far as you can?
Are you feet and boots in good condition? What about the feet of your ‘precious cargo’? How far will you be able to GOOD when their feet, or yours, start to take damage from ill-fitting shoes, boots, socks, and so forth? GET IN SHAPE, starting today! It is no harder than getting started – one step at a time.
Can you drop your pack and still have the strength to fight and protect your family/group if attacked? Besides upset locals, you’ll have a good chance of being spotted and targeted by marauding gangs. Your packs, weapons, and women are high value items to them, you know. They don’t ‘prep’ – they target those who do or those they see that are seemingly easy targets — like families who are trying to GOOD and have no real idea of how not to be seen doing so.
Speaking of locals, have you ensured they will let you actually get to your ‘hidey hole’ let alone welcome you into the area? (Remember, the land can only support so many people, and those who live there on a day to day basis won’t necessarily be happy to see yet another family or group coming around to consume natural resources.) But, you say, “I’ll fight my way in, if I have to…” Really? Are you around your GOOD location enough so that you know the terrain so well that you will be able to out wit and out fight the locals who may be determined to keep you out? What about your ‘precious cargo’? What happens to them, even if the locals make them leave the area? Starvation? Death by exposure? Entertainment for marauders?
The facts are that you and your ‘precious cargo’ have the best chance to make it through a SHTF scenario, especially where the ROL has deteriorated into, “A Failure of Civility,” by developing a NPP, defining your NPA, training with your NPT, and SIP for as long as possible until such time as civility is restored living with the cooperation of your NPA members.
Your preparations, training, and conditioning must, by necessity, be focused on what you may actually face, rather than contrived ‘Hollywood’ influenced story lines. If you need help, ask. If we can’t provide the training you need, we know of others who may fit your requirements. We can’t do it for you, but we can help you obtain the tools you need to do it with your neighbors.
To that end, we are offering two classes soon: Land Navigation and ‘Basic Skills for the NPT member‘. The first is in SE Michigan on 25/26 April; the 2nd in West Virginia 15 – 17 May 2015. Most of our classes are ‘open enrollment’ but we can do private classes for your group as the need arises. If you’re closer to Mason Dixon Tactical, by all means, contact JC Dodge. He can provide any training desired.
