Economic Indicators….

Another voice in the wilderness….

If you are preparing to defend family and friends and provide for their needs, being tactically proficient, as we know, is only a small part of the picture.  Having something other than paper federal reserve notes to purchase necessary items, meds, or food, at least in the short term, is a wise precaution.

Here’s an indicator that something is up. Silver and gold took another beating price wise.  For our purposes, that means it’s on sale.  Do what you can…

Something Really Ominous Is Coming – Hold On Tight

Something Really Ominous Is Coming – Hold On Tight

One of the rules by which the elite aristiocrats abide is they consider it rude to not warn us before they do something bad to us.  They’re like criminals with manners.  In other words, it’s gauche to flush the toilet while the serfs are in the shower without a heads up. – Anonymous

I honestly don’t know how long they can keep up this fraud using fraudulent Comex paper.  It’s gone on much longer that I ever thought conceivable.   I think we all underestimated the degree of corruption in DC and NYC, which means we’re all underestimating the consequences.

fed debt

We find out yesterday in a Washing Times article that Obama authorized the use of military force against U.S. civilians in 2010:  LINK.  As it turns out, the option of using the military in the Cliven Bundy situation was considered.  Is that the type of policy all you Obama supporters voted for?

Gold and silver get smashed in Comex trading every day this week, despite an avalanche of fundamental news that should have triggered a big move higher in the price of gold/silver.  A friend and colleague of mine called me this morning and said “they smashed gold and silver everyday this week – there has to something really bad coming at us.”

For those who recall, after a big move higher in early 2008, the price of silver was smashed in March from $20 starting on March 6, 2008.  Bear Stearns stock was trading well over $60/share at that point.  Silver bounces back to $20 and then gets annihilated on March 17, right after JP Morgan agreed to buy Bear for $2/share.

Meanwhile, in the background, Lehman Brothers was quietly on a path to collapse, as were AIG and Goldman Sachs.   After the Bear debacle settled, silver trended back up to $19.  But at the end of July that year, silver began a steep sell-off from $17.  Unbeknownst to most observers, Lehman Brothers was about to collapse.  At the same time that Lehman collapsed, AIG was collapsing – as was Goldman Sachs from its derivative ties to AIG.  By mid-September the U.S. financial had de facto collasped and we know how the story unfolded from there.  AIG and Goldman were saved because the former CEO of Goldman Sachs happened to be the Treasury Secretary at the time and his butt-boy, Tim Geithner, was head of the NY Fed.

My point here is that there’s a reason that the Fed, using its agent banks on the Comex, is working overtime to try and push gold and silver a lot lower using fraudulent Comex contracts while China – and now Russia – accumulate physical gold hand-over-fist.  Blinded by extreme corruption and hubris, the Fed and the Government are trying to destroy the messenger.

The message likely should be telling us that something devastating is unfolding behind the scenes.  Likely something far uglier than what unfolded in 2008.

I know for sure now that the housing market is starting collapse again and household formation is at 30-year lows – the friend who called me told me four homes for sale in his neighborhood reduced their asking price this morning.  Retail sales are plunging despite the onset of favorable shopping weather and the rigged GDP number went negative in Q1. If we could see the truth, I wonder had bad things really are…

From Sierra 12: Who turned out the lights? Night fighting considerations

S12 Night Ops
A lot of great articles from Max and D[T]G on night fighting and low light considerations.  We would like to piggyback on their shirt tails, adding in some additional thoughts .

Why do object seem to fade out or disappear when we stare right at them at night?

This is called the “Night blind spot”.  It is Located in central viewing axis (fovea), the Absence of rod cells in fovea creates the blind spot.  The “night blind spot” encompasses a viewing area of  5 to 10 degrees center of your visual field of view…..

Over distance the “night blind spot” will widen.  Focusing on a target at 3000 feet, your “night blind spot” now covers approximately 750 feet of your center viewing axis.

Want Dysentery? Construct a Make-Shift Water ‘Purifier’…

While checking out a few sites on preps, I found this: ]

Here’s the part that’ll get Preppers into trouble and quickly reduced the effectiveness of your Neighborhood Protection Team and/or family to zero:

To avoid water-related illnesses, it is imperative to learn how to filter your water using materials available to you. Here are three ways of purifying water for drinking. These are also great projects to do with children to teach them this valuable skill.

1. Homemade Water Filter

When you begin to filter water from lakes, rivers and groundwater, there are 4 steps to keep in mind:

1. Coagulation: removes dirt, metals and other particles suspended in water. Chemicals like Alum are added to the water that form sticky particles called “floc” which attract the dirt particles.

2. Sedimentation: the combined weight of the sediment and chemicals stuck together become heavy and sink to the bottom.

3. Filtration: smaller particles are removed as water passes through a series of filters (sand, gravel, charcoal)

4. Disinfection: to kill bacteria or microorganisms found in the water, a small amount of chlorine is added.

Materials You Will Need:

  • 1-liter soda bottles cut in half
  • Napkins, cheesecloth or paper towels
  • *Gravel
  • *Sand
  • Activated Filter Carbon (available at pet stores)
  • Large water container for dirty water (pitchers or gallon jugs)
  • Dirty water (made by adding dirt, twigs, leaves, etc., to water)
  • Large waste container (plastic container, thick garbage bag, etc.)
  • *Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide, water purification drops or tablets
  • 2 clean pitchers for filtered water
  1. Cut 1-liter soda bottle in half and put top of soda bottle upside-down (similar to a funnel) inside the bottom half. The top half will build the filter, the bottom half will hold the filtered water.
  2. Add napkin, cheesecloth or paper towel at the neck of the inverted bottle.
  3. Add filtration materials in this sequence:Add unfiltered water and allow water to seep through the filter.
    1. 1 inch of charcoal
    2. 2 inches sand
    3. 1 inch gravel
    4. 2 inches sand
    5. 1 inch gravel
  4. Add unfiltered water and allow water to seep through the filter.
  5. For added measure, it is recommended to chemically treat filtered water to kill off any pathogens that were not filtered.

All this filter does without the chemicals is remove large debris and sediment.  It cannot remove any pathogen by ‘filtering’ with charcoal or sand.

However, Sawyer brand filters can, and do.  You can find them here.  Here’s why, and this is from Sawyer:

“…Each filter is certified for ABSOLUTE microns; that means there is no pore size larger than 0.1 or 0.02 micron in size. This makes it impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giradia, Vibrio cholerae and  Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through the Sawyer PointONE™ biological filter. At 7 log (99.99999%) the filter attains the highest
level of filtration available today.  If viruses are an issue, we offer the Point ZeroTWO Purifier (0.02 micron absolute pores), the first and thus far only portable purification device to physically remove viruses, which it does at a >5.5 log (99.9997%) rate, exceeding EPA and NSF recommendations.    All Sawyer filters have been tested by independent and qualified research laboratories according to U.S. EPA standards for water filters, and meet or exceed EPA standards. Sawyer’s revolutionary technology has also been tested and
verified by the United Nations, and is currently being used in more than 70 countries around the world. “

Here’s their rating chart:

Sawyer Filtration Rates

Now, I’m sure the article’s author was well meaning, and thought they were showing some good improvisation, but the information on filtration was wrong and dangerous to preppers.  Dysentery is not anything to laugh about.

Spend the money on this system for your family:  The Sawyer Point Zero Two Bucket Purifier Kit.  All you do is provide the bucket.  This small, lightweight filter kit can provide up to 170 gallons  of clean water per day. Assembly Kit Includes: Hole Cutter, a Sawyer Point ZeroTWO™ 0.02 Micron Absolute Inline Water Purifier, adapter, hose, Filter Cleaner, Filter Hanger, and detailed instruction book.

$125 for this one.  What’s your family’s health worth?

Sawyer Zero Point Two

GLSC also has portable systems which DTG actually uses in the field and carries.  By the way, we all have one of the above systems at home because we know how important clean water is to life.  Additionally, we carry stabilized oxygen with us in the field to add to our purified water, “just in case.”

So, it’s up to you.  Grab some dirt, buy some charcoal, get some empty pop bottles and ‘filter’ your water and experience the joys of Dysentery, or do it right and get a Sawyer system.

Think I’ll go have some purified water…..

Why, they would never, would they?

The S is definitely closer to HTF than many realize.  Here’s something that caught my eye from the article:

“The directive states clearly that it is for engaging civilians during times of unrest.

A U.S. official said the Obama administration considered but rejected deploying military force under the directive during the recent standoff with Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his armed supporters.

Mr. Bundy is engaged in a legal battle with the federal Bureau of Land Management over unpaid grazing fees. Along with a group of protesters, Mr. Bundy in April confront.ed federal and local authorities in a standoff that ended when the authorities backed down.”

So….anyone up for some more PT, Neighborhood Protection Team training, or prepping?  It seems that Garand and Lawson were right on the money with the title of their work, “A Failure of Civility.”

Civility is failing.  Ginormously.

NPT Action Item: Rule of Law aka ‘Want Freedom?”

A new friend to DTG who is a high-speed and low drag forwarded this on from the ACLU.  Yes, I know they come down on the wrong side of the Constituiton and Original Intent many times, but just like a blind squirrel, this time they found the acorn.

Please disseminate as widely as possible.  This would be perfect for your Neighborhood Protection Association’s auxilliary to take on as a project.

States, cities, and towns across the country have been considering resolutions or legislation opposing Sections 1021 and 1022 of the FY 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the dangerous provisions that would authorize the president — and all future presidents — to order the military to pick up and imprison people captured far from any battlefield without charging them or putting them on trial.

And you can get involved! The ACLU has drafted a model state and local bill that you can encourage your city council and/or local legislator to adopt.

Our toolkit includes:

    • The model legislation
    • Talking points
    • Tips on how to pass a community resolution
    • A guide on how to organize an in-district meeting with your elected officials

Download the toolkit »

Our model legislation does several things:

    1. It sends a message from the legislative body to Congress that Sections 1021 and 1022 of the NDAA should be repealed.
    2. It prohibits state/local employees from aiding the federal armed forces in any investigation, arrest, detention, or trial of any person within the United States under the NDAA.
    3. It sends a message from the legislative body to Congress that the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) should expire at the end of the war in Afghanistan so that the government cannot continue to use the AUMF as justification for its claims that war is everywhere and anywhere and that the president can order the American military to imprison without charge or trial people picked up far from any battlefield.

More information on Section 1021 and 1022 of the NDAA can be found at

This post, from WRSA, details a letter sent by a medically retired USAF Security Forces Senior Airman to the President of the United States.  If you haven’t done so, check it out.  This young man epitomizes courage in his life, no matter the obstacles.  I’d like to buy him a beer one day.  He inspires.

Then I got to thinking about the young man’s training and lineage.  The AI found the below article and I thought it worth publishing here as an Op-Ed.  Why?  Many times, when people see the USAF SF Beret and “Defensor Fortis” (Defending the Force) flash, or hear some AF troop talking about what they do, derisive comments are sure to follow, as noted the article regarding the young airman who graduated from the US Army’s Ranger School this past February.  But as the article also points out, those who make such comments know nothing about the history of USAF Security Force units training, capabilities, and performance in combat along side our nation’s Special Forces troops.

Chances are that if you have a former USAF Security Force trooper in your NPT, you’ll have a lot of talent and proven skill to draw on when the chips are down.

Take it from an old Air Force Security Force troop.

“…their real purpose in life is to serve as the Air Force’s infantry, securing airfields and working alongside other units in support roles.”

Travel Light, Not Necessary to Freeze at Night….

The old axiom, ‘Travel light, freeze at night,” while certainly a truism, can be lessened considerably in temperate climate zones by adding a couple very lightweight items to your ruck as well as taking the advice of many other experienced people such as JC Dodge, Max Velocity, Sierra 12 (we feel like we have a connection to these guys, as they include “Defensive Studies Group” in their name, which is very close to ours), and Mosby, whether on their blogs/sites or through their commentary at places like WRSA.

During our last ‘Train the Trainer 1: Essential Skills” course, conducted from 15 to 18 M ay 14, the class faced temperatures in the 20’s on their first two nights along with snow flurries and 25mph gusting to 30mph winds.  Learning occurred.

So, how not to freeze at night with light gear?

First, we recommend including a lightweight set of long underwear.  Polypro, under armor type; silk all work equally well  So will cotton, reighght up to the point that it gets wet….just sayin’.

Next, consider replacing your USGI Woobie with one from Wiggy’s.  Color/pattern isn’t so important as the Lamilite used to provide the insulation.  You can order through GLSC, who’s an authorized distributor if you like or direct from Wiggy’s.  Right now he’s selling these at 20% off.  While you’re at it, get the light weight ‘patrol bag’, too, and replace your USGI surplus.  Wiggy’s products keep you warm even when they get wet.  The Lamilite pulls moisture away from your body, and it works.  Technically, it’s ‘hydrophobic’ in that water does not attach itself to the fiber, and therefore, keeps you insulated while it’s self-drying.  See this video for a real-world demonstration:

Clean medium weight socks, such as the Vermont ‘Darn Tough’ recommended here along with a toe warmer (we like ‘Grabber’ brand as they seem to last longer both in storage and when used) on each foot adds a lot of warmth.  If it’s really cold, open a couple ‘Grabber’ brand hand warmers in the bag, and for older, cold/weather sensitive hip joints, get a couple of adhesive body warmers and attach to your pants.  You will sleep like a baby as long as the situation allows.

Sleeping in clean clothes, taking off your wet clothes and storing them between the ground pad and your bag will help, too.  Immeasurably.

Add a watch cap or light face mask/head covering to your sleeping gear.  Remember ,we lose most of our heat from an uncovered head.

Why do this?  Training, let alone ‘real world’ WROL/SHTF scenarios will steadily exhaust you.  Just the stress alone will start to take a toll, let alone the change in diet and sleep deprivation.  So, when you do get to sleep, it’s important that you sleep as comfortably as possible, given the exigencies of your particular situation, which may include the need to have no fire/visible light.

If you can, while you’re still looking around, get the most bomb proof poncho for your ground cloth that you can find.  The old 1960’s issue rubberized poncho is getting more scarce than hen’s teeth, but are worth the money you’ll pay if you find one.  Short of that, get the best you can find.

Adding a ‘space blanket under your bag will help retain residual heat.

Tax Dollar Grants…

I’m sure the federal government has a program somewhere to provide grants to small businesses or groups teach self-reliance, neighborhood protection team building, or marksmanship and weapon manipulation….imagine how peaceful our little AO’s would be with a $283,000 grant used for said training…..ok…sarcasm off.

Here’s where federal grants are going:

“A stingray is a device that mimics a cell tower and thereby tricks all wireless devices on the same network into communicating with it.”

“Howard told Erie County legislators last week that the stingray surveillance device his office has owned since 2008 is used only for tracking a person’s movements, not for gathering content of cellphone communications. The surveillance equipment can capture data from targeted cellphones even when they’re not in use.

He told the lawmakers that the courts should determine how he can use the equipment, not them.

Use of the device has raised concerns among Buffalo-area lawmakers over potential abuses of people’s privacy.

Democratic Legislator Patrick B. Burke says that the equipment can capture data from cellphones even when they’re not in use.

When Howard was asked by lawmakers how many times his department has used the stingray device, he refused to answer.

The county used a $283,000 terrorism prevention grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to pay for the device.”
